The Benefits of Hyaluronic Acid in Skincare

Posted by Pure Cosmetica on 27th Mar 2023

Hyaluronic acid has become a buzzword in the skincare industry, with many products featuring it as a key ingredient. But what exactly is hyaluronic acid, and what benefits does it offer for your skin?

What is Hyaluronic acid

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring substance in the human body, with the highest concentration found in our skin. It is a molecule that can hold up to 1000 times its weight in water, making it an excellent hydrator. In skincare, Hyaluronic Acid is used as a humectant, which means it helps to draw moisture into the skin and keep it there.

Hyaluronic acid has a unique ability to bind water molecules and form a gel-like substance that fills the spaces between collagen and elastin fibres in the dermis, the middle layer of the skin. This helps to keep the skin hydrated and plump, which can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Hyaluronic acid also helps to improve the skin's barrier function, which helps to prevent water loss and maintain optimal hydration levels.

Moreover, Hyaluronic Acid is hydrophilic, which means it has an affinity for water. When applied to the skin, Hyaluronic acid molecules draw water from the deeper layers of the skin and the surrounding environment, including the air. This water then penetrates the outer layer of the skin, the epidermis, and hydrates the skin cells. By drawing moisture into the skin, Hyaluronic acid can improve the skin's texture, softness, and overall appearance.

The benefits of hyaluronic acid in skincare

1.    Hydration:
Hyaluronic acid is an excellent hydrator, making it ideal for those with dry or dehydrated skin. By drawing moisture into the skin, it helps to plump up fine lines and wrinkles, giving a more youthful appearance.

2.    Soothing
Hyaluronic acid has anti-inflammatory properties, which can help to calm and soothe irritated or sensitive skin.

3.    Anti-ageing
As we age, our skin's natural production of Hyaluronic acid decreases, which can lead to loss of volume and elasticity. By using products containing Hyaluronic acid, we can help to counteract this loss and maintain a more youthful appearance.

4.    Versatility
Hyaluronic acid is suitable for all skin types, including oily and acne-prone skin. It is a lightweight ingredient that won't clog pores, making it an excellent addition to any skincare routine.

5.    Improves skin texture
Hyaluronic acid can help to improve skin texture by reducing the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and uneven skin tone. It can also help to boost collagen production, which is essential for maintaining firm, plump skin.

Benefits of Salicylic Acid in skincare

Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) and is derived from the willow bark. It provides a gentle exfoliation, unclogs pores, removes excess oil and calms inflammation, making it best suited for acne-prone and oily skin type.

Where to find hyaluronic acid

We’ve incorporated Hyaluronic Acid into our SOOTHE Clay Face Mask and NOURISH Clay Face Mask formulations. Generally, the concentration of Hyaluronic Acid used in skincare products ranges from 0.1% to 2%, so we’ve used a balanced amount of 1.0% which is suitable for our clay and botanical oil formulations to provide optimal hydration to the skin.

Along with 1.0% Salicylic Acid (read all about its benefits here) and other natural ingredients and botanical oils, we’ve created an effective formulation that is suitable for all skin types.

The Hyaluronic Acid in our Clay Face Masks promotes healthy skin hydration which provides a better environment for collagen production.

By leaving the clay mask on, the Hyaluronic Acid has more time to go deeper into the dermis, whilst the clay and the Salicylic Acid work by penetrating the pores and breaking down the dead skin cell build-up and excess oil. This helps prevent clogged pores and reduce the amount of bacteria on the skin, which can in turn reduce acne breakouts.

After every clay mask application, it’s important to re-introduce moisture into your skin by applying one of our Face Oil Serums, which promote deep nourishment and a healthy glowing skin.
