Antioxidants – All you need to know

Posted by Pure Cosmetica on 1st Jan 2023

Antioxidants are essential to skin health by protecting it from free radical damage, protect it against UV damage and help reduce wrinkles. Let’s find out how antioxidants can benefit the skin.

First up, what are free radicals?

Free radicals are molecules produced in the body because of essential metabolic processes of converting food into energy; or derived from external sources such as UV sun exposure, air pollution, chemicals and smoking.

Free radicals are highly unstable and can damage DNA, skin cells, proteins and lipids.

Free radicals are essential while they are in balance with antioxidants. However, when there are more free radicals than antioxidants, oxidative stress occurs. In the skin it is the main cause for skin problems such as acne, hyperpigmentation, inflammation and skin ageing.

What are antioxidants?

An antioxidant is a chemical property that is given to substances that can neutralise free radicals and stop the damage being caused by oxidative stress.

Many substances can act as antioxidants, but the most popular in skincare being Vitamin C, Vitamin A and Vitamin E. Many of these antioxidants are natural and plant-based, which is why our skincare oil range is so beneficial for skin health.

Our skincare range is packed with antioxidant goodness to help reduce the visible signs of skin ageing, protect the skin from damage and promote skin cell regeneration.
